1 cup dates
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 cup boiling water
140g chopped walnuts
2 cups plain flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder

2 cups plain flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
Cream together butter and brown sugar, then add egg.
Over heat, beat together dates, bicarbonate of soda and water until thick. Add walnuts. Combine with butter mixture, along with sifted flour and baking powder.
Bake in a loaf pan in a moderate oven for approximately 1 hour. Slice and spread with butter.
